Jess was drafted in the service after his five brothers, he went into the Army, and his brothers were in different branches of the service. He left a wife and four small children.
Jess entered the Military January, 1945, he boarded a train in Ogden, Utah and rode on it to Kansas, where he boarded another train and went to Camp Hood, Texas.
Jess was a private, he taught classes of 50 men to load, aim and fire a rifle. Instructed men to use automatic rifle, rocket launchers, rifle grenade launchers, bayonet, trench knife, and hand grenades. Taught men to take advantage of camouflage and concealment, to recognize hand signals, enemy vehicles and aircraft.
Jess was discharged November 30, 1945 after the war ended.
Jess was very patriotic, he loved this country, respected and honored the flag. He thought all those who served in the military had given a lot for their country and should be treated with respect.
