Lanny entered the military at age 17, his dad signed for him. He went to San Diego, CA for his basic training in the Navy.
On his first ship the USS Wilhoite, he was made a cook, or as the Navy called him a Commissioned Commissary Man. He also spent time on deck watching for enemy missiles. He remained a Commissary Man for the rest of his time in service.
Lanny spent most of his time going from Hawaii to Japan. These trips were to watch for enemy subs, airplanes, and ships. If they saw them they would send messages to headquarters.
When the Vietnam war started he was still in the Navy they were sent to watch for Russian IBM Missiles. Even from the ship they could see `some of the fighting going on.
After one trip to Vietnam they came to California and docked, they were met by protesters who threw things at them, called them horrible names, and worst of all spit on them.
Lanny died in a car accident in 1977, he never wanted to talk much about his years in the service.
