I was drafted into the Navy in 1945 and served about 11 months. They shipped us out on the USS McCracken to Okinawa. I worked as supply hand for the kitchen on the way over. We stopped at Pearl Harbor, then to the Marshall Islands and Carolyn Islands and picked up more ships and destroyers on the way over. We docked at night in Okinawa. Everything was destroyed except the Burial Vaults, and we hid in those when the bombs came in. We were sent there to rebuild barracks and airfields. I was with the 68 CB Battalions.
There were 6 of us brothers serving at the same time. Me, Zane, and Dee in the Navy. Jess and Earl in the Army, and Miles in the Air Force as a pilot on the Air Force Carriers.
When I came home on the USS Pierce, all we had to eat was macaroni for 19 days. When I was being shipped out they only gave me minutes to get ready to go home. So my friend Norman Crowfoot wrote home to my wife (Leah) letting her know I was coming.
