Killed by accidental explosion in Hollania—Dutch New Guinea (Dutch New Guinia now known as Papua) April 22, 1944.
Was occupied by Japanese in 1942 in the general collapse of allied forces at the start of the war.
Its airfields were destroyed as a viable unit by the Army Air Corps in early April and was taken by allies in early May. McArthur made Hollania his headquarters before the Philippines Invasions.
New Guinea was of great importance during WWII, because of its close proximity to Australia, and its large size. It could be used to build air strips for bombing raids.
