After basic training in Fort Hood, Texas, Charlie was assigned to a new Brigade called “The Tank Destroyers” at Camp Bowie, Texas. They found out the German tanks had too much armor for these machines so they disbanded the Brigade and was put into the infantry. He landed on the beach of France 8 days after D Day. Charlie was wounded in action in the Battle of the Bulge, and spent 6 weeks in the hospital in Paris. Later was wounded again, but not hospitalized. Returned home about 6 months after VE Day to return to farming.
