I was drafted into the Marine Corps in March 1969 and served until January 1971. I went through Boot Camp and Communications School at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California. After graduating from Communications school as a radio operator, I volunteered for combat duty in Viet Nam. I was in Viet Nam from October 1969 to October 1970.
While in Viet Nam I was with the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division out of An Hoa.
I was the radio operator for a forward observation team with 81 mm Mortars, attached to Mike Company. Our areas of operation were primarily the Arizona Territory, Charlie Ridge, and the Liberty Road through the Phu Nhuon valley. I was also included in an operation with the 7th Marines in the Dodge City Territory.
I served my entire tour with Mike Company, except for the 30 days I was medivac’d to the USS Sanctuary with malaria. After returning from Viet Nam I served for several months at Camp Pendleton, California with the 4th Marine Division, until I was discharged.
