After taking basic training for four weeks, Loren got pneumonia and had to stay in the hospital for two weeks. When he got out of the hospital, he had to take basic training over again. He got out of basic training in August of 1952. The first group he took basic training with were sent to Korea. The second group he took basic training with went to Germany. While he was in the Germany, his older brother, Everett, was killed in a mine explosion on his birthday.
