Volunteered for service in December of 1975 when I was Senior at Duchesne High School. Attended weekend drills once a month until July of 1976, then I was sent to Fort Knox Kentucky for Basic Training. After Basic Training I was sent to Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland to Small Arms Repair School (Trained in Rifle, Pistol, Machine Gun Repair..etc) . Returned back to Uintah Basin where I married my sweetheart and we began raising our family.
I was with the 1457th Engr Bn, Company A located in Vernal Utah for all of my 6 years of service. I was in the Supply Section as the Unit Armor (Small Arms Repairman). Was later promoted to Staff Sergeant and became the Unit Supply Sergeant.
The National Guard taught me many things and helped me with skills I use to this day. One instance while traveling to Camp Williams on a cold Friday night in May, our convoy came upon a car that was in the middle of the Provo river about a mile above Bridal Veil Falls. Sgt. Verl Tucker had, had a thought to bring a rope with him in his vehicle. Another Sgt and myself tied this rope to ourselves and helped the driver of the car to the shore. This instance taught me the value of Team Work and being prepared. Both of us who went into the water that night received the Bronze Arrow Head ribbon, though it was a group effort to get this man to shore.
I am very proud to have served my country through the Utah National Guard, what a great bunch of guys.
