I was drafted into the Army. In basic, I had a chance to get on a medical, because my left elbow was swelling up and hurting so much from the rigorous training. However, I turned it down knowing I wanted to do my part in Vietnam.
When orders came out I was to report to Ft. Bliss, Texas for Chapperal Volcan Training. MOS 16 R 20. None of my drill sargents knew what the assignment was. When I got there, we started classes 8 hours a day. Once I had a secret clearance. A lot of the things that we were trained in were classified. Once our class was out of class training the Army formed a Battalion (5th) in the 59th Artilery Bergaid. this was ADA Battalion (meaning Air Defence Artillery). We were stationed at Biggs Filed where there was a Vietamize language school and us. We were there to deploy to any part of the world within 24 hours. We could tell when ever there were hot spots besides Vietnam in the world. The C5A's would fly into Biggs and we would load our equipment into them. Then we were confined to our barracks, with no phone or mail privileges. Then when the alert came off we went back to training.
