I joined the Navy January 15, 1942, just after the Pearl Harbor attack. I spent the rest of January and February, 1942 at San Diego, California in basic training. I was sent to Mare Island Naval Base in San Francisco Bay and was assigned to the US Destroyer, USS Hull 00350. I spent the next three and a half years with the Pacific Naval Fleet, from the battle of Midway to jut before the invasion of the Philippines. I was transferred from the Destroyer Hull December 11, 1944 and sent to Philadelphia Naval Yard to Engineering School. Upon finishing the training, April 18, 1945, the war had ended and I was sent back to San Francisco. There I was given the opportunity to help run a new troop ship, the USS General Stuart Heintzelman AP159 and we carried 2500 reinforcement army troops to help occupy Japan.
Upon returning to the United States, I was given an honorable discharge from the Navy, November 18, 1945.
