I joined the Navy right out of high school. Spent 9 weeks in Basic Training, then was assigned to The USS Ticonderoga for a short time. I was transferred to the USS Coral Sea. There is where I spent the rest of my service.
We sailed to Hawaii, four different ports in Japan, then to Subic Bay Philippines from there to Hong Kong, China. During this time we sailed down the coast of Laos and Vietnam. We spent time up and down the west coast of the United States from San Diego to San Francisco, Seattle and on to Vancouver, Canada.
The USS Coral Sea was 65,000 tons- 978 ft. long. There were 3500 sailors on board.
There was flight opts going on all the time when we were at sea.
