Perry Maxfield in the artillery as a mathematician and a surveyor. Besides his other duties in the army, he was trusted to guard an atomic weapon in Germany. He also served in the leadership positions during his time in the army. He was honorably discharged with a rand of Sp. 4 in November 1958.
He was always a bridge builder between the people, because his kind and considerate disposition. He demonstrated that quality, while serving the people of Finland during his LDS mission or serving in the army. On Christmas 1957, he was invited for a dinner to the home of a German family. Perry forged a friendship with them that lasted his entire life.
Perry hated the war, but he would have gladly given his life for his country, if he were to called to do so. However, he felt thankful that he did not have to go to war, even though he served in the army during the height of the Cold War. He was thankful that he could serve his country in the military.
