“It took 15 days to go from Ft.Ord to Toyko. We got two meals a day. I lost 15 lbs in 15 days. I was hungry all the time. I saw 5 cent candy bars sell for $20 each. MacArthur and Hiroshito were signing the peace treaty as we were coming into Toyoko Harbor. I was assigned to the 442nd Sig Hwy Construction Co. We built outside telephone lines and short wave stations. We had to push over gun emplacements to clear the shore. There were concrete walls 3 feet thick that we had to push into the ocean with dozers. We built the first short wave station in Japan and our outfit got a wreath on our left sleeve for outstanding duty. My brother Bill was in Japan at this time in the 11th Airborne. We got together at Christmas and sent a Merry Christmas telegraph to Mom from Toyoko”
