Morris was called into active duty September 1943 in the Army. He received his basic training at Camp Abbot Oregon, in the Army Engineers. He served 22 months in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and in Japan. He worked in what they called a “Motor Pool”. This is where all the military vehicles were kept. Sometimes he drove Troop convoys to witness the ruins of Hiroshima, where the atomic bomb was dropped-which was a devastating sight!
He got to meet the famous war correspondent, Ernie Pyle when he spent time on Leshima, near Okinawa.
He received an honorable discharge from the service January 11, 1946.
