I was drafted while attending Utah State University and reported for duty soon after I graduated with my bachelor’s degree. I was first sent to Ft. Lewis, Washington for Basic Training and then stayed for additional Advanced Infantry Training. I then applied for and was accepted to Officer Candidate School (OCS) in Ft. Benning, Georgia. One week before completing the 6-month OCS course and being commissioned, the Army offered all in OCS an early out if we agreed not to be commissioned but to serve as regular army. The Vietnam War was finally winding down and the Army was cutting back on the number of 2nd lieutenants. I was then sent to Ft. Hood, Texas, to the First Armored Division Headquarters where I served in G-1, making officer assignments. I completed my service with a rank of SP5 and returned home to work in California and later moved to Mapleton, Utah. I own my own real estate development company, Blackhawk Land Company.
