My first ship 'John Penn' was sunk at Guatl Canal. My division was the 3rd division. Thirteen of us out of 75 in the 3rd division survived the sinking of the ship. I was next assigned to the 'USS President Hayes'. We proceeded on to the Solomon Islands then to Boganville. We then continued on to the other Islands. I was in combat for a little more than 3 years. I ended up in Okinawa, where I fought my last battle in the occupation forces, in Sasabo Japan. I was honorably discharged as a disabled Veteran after being in the Maryland naval hospital in California for close to 2 years.
