I entered the service when my “number” was close to being up in March 1969. I did Basic Training in Fort Ord, California followed by AIT in Fort Leonard, Missouri for Combat Engineer Training. I then was transferred to Germany where I did further training in demolition for five months. From Germany, I was transferred to the Republic of Vietnam. While in Vietnam I served in North Central Vietnam Quang Tri Province area. All of my time was spent in Charlie 2 locating and performing demolition of land mines with combat units. I was injured while in my third month of being in Vietnam. The personnel carrier I was on was sitting on a land mine that was above a 200-pound bomb. When the personnel carrier was started the land mine and bomb exploded throwing the personnel carrier 30 feet to the side and I ended up in the bottom of a fifteen-foot hole. From there to state side, I remember very little. I was given an honorable discharge and released to the Veterans Administration in Salt Lake City in October 1970.
