I went to Fort Ord California June 15, 1952 to start Basic Training. After Basic training my orders were for service in the Far East Command.
On January 13, 1953 we shipped out of San Francisco harbor on a Troop Transport ship. There were 3000 men besides lots of other stuff on the ship. We were 16 days crossing the Pacific to Yokohoma Harbor in Japan. Arriving there on the 29 of January 1953.
After arriving in Japan lots of men were sent to Korea a few of us were sent to Hokkaido Island in Japan to be part of the 1st Cavalry Division. We went by train for two days and nights then put on a ship to cross from the main Honshu Island to Hokkaido.
The weather was very cold and lots of snow. The summer was very hot and humid.
On July 16, 1953 I received word that my dear cousin Max Stevenson was killed in Korea by a mortar shell. Through the Red Cross and some other help I was appointed to escort Max’s body home from Japan to USA. I left my outfit on the 1st of September for Tokyo. We left Japan on the 1st of October by ship to San Francisco where we arrived on the 13 of October 1953. After Max was buried I went back to Fort Ord on November 3, 1953 and was shipped from there to Fort Lewis, Washington. After finishing my two year time I was released from the service at Fort Lewis on June 15, 1954 I took a Greyhound bus to Salt Lake.
