After passing my physical for the draft, my mother demanded me to join the National Guard and even went with me to make sure I signed up. Well, I had a good job and a cute girlfriend and didn't want to lose either one by being gone for two years, so I signed up.
I took my basic training at Fort Ord, California in June and July that was a real eye opener. We all thought we had died and gone to hell that first day or two, and the hippies sure hated their new haircuts.
My other training was taken at Fort Belvoir, Virginia from July to October. It was more like just going to school or work. I was able to see a lot of things I never otherwise had seen back there, because of the Army. There is a lot of history in Washington DC and West Virginia.
The National Guard drilled one or two weekends per month and had a two week summer camp each summer. We were never called to active duty.
