Philip Ross Thompson- Enlisted in the US Air Force January 5, 1961; had 8 weeks of Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base, by San Antonio, Texas. Then had about 3 months training at Amarillo Air Force Base, Amarillo, Texas, as a Jet Aircraft Mechanic (trained on B-47 bombers). Transferred to Castle Air Force Base, Merced, California, and assigned to the 93 Bombardment Wing, Strategic Air Command, where I served as B-52 Bomber mechanic for a little over 2 ½ years. Was on the ground crew of a B-52b bomber, A/C #012 most of this time. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, our aircraft was flying an airborne alert mission with atomic bombs aboard when one of its 8 engines went out causing the Aircraft Command to land at Elmendorf Air Base, Alaska. Our ground crew, engine/power plant specialists, and weapons specialist were flown to Alaska to service and repair the aircraft; this trip and the alert status we were under at that time was the most exciting part of my 4 years service.
My last year of service was at Travis Air Force Base, Fairfield, California, as an aircraft technical orders (service/repair manuals) updated for all of the different air planes at Travis. I was honorably discharged from active duty on January 4, 1965, and served an additional 2 years in the Air Force Reserve.
